Coffee Morning and Community Library notes…

Happy Birthday Community Library

At the July Coffee Morning, we celebrated the 5th birthday of our Community Library!! A big thank you to everyone who supports us and makes these mornings so enjoyable. Our library has changed a little during those five years, particularly since the various quarantine periods of 2020. After that challenging year, it happened that we were the only local Community Library still running and consequently the public library reduced their support. This makes it harder for us to get up-to-date books, but we endeavour to maintain a variety of genres and keep our stock refreshed. One change we have made is to let go of children's books. Also, large print books have gone temporarily, but we will be introducing a fresh selection in the near future. And, thanks to a generous and thoughtful donation, we have started a small crime and thriller section.

From this section, we are highlighting for our Book of the Month a series by Nicola Upson, 'An absolute delight . . . Upson has created a fine series of cosy but intelligent mysteries.' Nicola Upson's main protagonist in the fourth of this series, Fear in the Sunlight, is real-life crime writer Josephine Tey (1896 - 1952) alongside fictional Chief Inspector Archie Penrose. Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma also play their part in this unusual crime novel, which starts out in 1954 in London but spends most of its time in 1936 Portmeirion. Upson cleverly draws in the reader to make you feel as if you are one of the party gathering to celebrate Tey's 40th birthday… A real page-turner.

The Coffee Morning was busy in July and we were glad of the fine weather to be able to put some tables and chairs outside. Let's hope for another fine morning on Wednesday, August 2nd and we look forward to seeing you at the Village Hall, 10 - 12, for more coffee, cake and meeting friends.
